Malgré les célèbres Vision du sermon ou Christ jaune, l'image répandue de Paul Gauguin n'est pas celle d'un être enclin à la spiritualité. Sa formation religieuse au petit séminaire d'Orléans l'a pourtant marqué d'une empreinte durable. Notre ouvrage analyse les étapes d'un parcours spirituel qui a conduit Gauguin de la théologie de sa jeunesse à la réfutation des dogmes. En dépit de son aphorisme provocateur " Il faut tuer Dieu ", Gauguin n'a en fait jamais cessé d'être fasciné par ce qu'il nommait " l'Insondable Mystère ".
Confrontant la religion de son enfance à diverses formes de pensée et de spiritualité au fil de ses lectures et de ses rencontres, il est resté convaincu de la valeur universelle de l'Evangile dont il a toutefois contesté l'interprétation littérale. Sous l'influence de la théosophie, il a peu à peu évolué vers un syncrétisme religieux mêlant Jésus, Bouddha, les divinités hindoues et polynésiennes à l'animisme le plus primitif dans une quête passionnée du divin.
Le présent ouvrage se propose d'analyser les étapes d'un parcours spirituel qui a conduit Gauguin de la théologie de sa jeunesse à la réfutation des dogmes. Outre une analyse des oeuvres et des textes du peintre-écrivain nécessaires à la compréhension de sa spiritualité, on trouvera ici une présentation des livres majeurs qui ont directement ou indirectement nourri sa réflexion.
